Butler's Marissa DeCola carded an 81 at the PIAA Western Regional Girls Golf Championship Wednesday at Tom's Run Golf Course in Blairsville, which qualified her for the PIAA Championships.

DeCola, a sophomore, finished behind Shady Side Academy's Kendall Allen, who won the event with a 4-over par 76.

DeCola had fired an 86 as a freshman in last year's regional, so she felt more at ease this time around.

"I knew the course a little better," said DeCola. "I was used to it and I played a practice round on it last Sunday."

DeCola got off to a strong start, having started off on the No. 10 hole. She recorded a 39, which included four pars and a birdie on No. 13.

She had a 42 on the front nine, which also included four pars and a birdie on No. 8. That was a nice recovery after recording 7s on the Nos. 4 and 7 holes.

"I had a couple of bad swings that were a little off," said DeCola. "I bounced back, though, and didn't let it affect me."

DeCola had four pars and a birdie on both the front and back nine holes. She recorded a 7 on the No. 4 and 7 holes which led to a 42 on the front but recovered for a 39 on the back nine.

Allen won by four strokes over Kittanning's Ann Coligan and Fox Chapel's Nadia Luttner, the latter who captured the WPIAL championship two weeks ago.

DeCola had finished second behind Luttner at the WPIAL finals by one stroke.

Her Butler teammate, Mara Shingleton, finished in 17th place with a 91, which was five strokes behind the final state qualifying spot. The top 11 place winners advanced to the state final.

Shingleton, a senior, had qualified for the WPIAL finals four times and reached the PIAA regional twice in her varsity career.

The PIAA Championships will be held Monday and Tuesday at Heritage Hills Golf Course in York.

DeCola is hopeful last year's experience will again play a key role in her success this time around.

"I feel a little bit more confident," said DeCola. "I have bigger goals for states. Last year I wanted to enjoy myself. I didn't know what it would be like.

"This year, I'm going to take it more seriously."

Volleyball

Carlie Bieranowski had 10 kills and 10 service points and Madison Rotto added 12 points, nine kills and 22 assists to lead the host Freeport volleyball team to a 25-18, 26-24, 25-19 victory over top-ranked South Fayette Wednesday.

Anna Christy added 11 points and 20 assists, Alyssa Vigliotti 12 points and four kills, Laura Prunty seven kills and 11 points, Ashley Massart 12 points and Katie Pullano 12 digs for Freeport.

The Yellowjackets finish out section play (11-0, 15-0 overall) at Deer Lakes today before preparing for the WPIAL playoffs.
