Frank "Pickle" Herman, 85, of Butler died Wednesday morning at the Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born June 10, 1924, in Lyndora, he was a son of the late John and Eva (Chuma) Herman.

He had worked in the silicon department for the Armco Steel plant in Butler for 41 years until his retirement in 1983.

He was a member of St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church in Lyndora, was a former member of the Men's Club at St. John's and also was on the repast dinner committee. Frank was a lifetime member of VFW Post 249 in Butler.

He enjoyed woodworking, bird feeding and making wooden birdhouses.

A veteran of World War II, Frank had served with the Army.

Surviving are his wife, Susan S. (Sherba) Herman, who he married June 8, 1946; four children, Jeanne (James) Sheffer of Holley, N.Y., Frank M. (Marie) Herman of Hamlin, N.Y., Gloria Hoffman of Butler, and Joni (Jim) Horner of Franklin; seven grandchildren; a step-granddaughter; 11 great-grandchildren; two step-great-granddaughters; numerous nieces and nephews; and a sister, Helen (Paul) Uram of Butler.

He was preceded in death by seven brothers and a sister.

<B>Herman </B>— Friends of Frank "Pickle" Herman, who died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the <B>Geibel Funeral Home</B>, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church, 105 Kohler Ave., Lyndora. Abbot Leo Schlosser, pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in Butler County Memorial Park.Parasta's services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.Military honors will be performed by the VFW/American Legion Honor Squad at the cemetery chapel.Information also is available at www.geibelfuneralhome.com.
