Pittsburgh police say a man committed suicide during a standoff that began with his pregnant girlfriend and their two sons in the home.

Police say the woman and the 3- and 4-year-old boys were able to leave unharmed before the man shot himself in the head around 9:30 a.m. Thursday. The Allegheny County medical examiner's office identifies the man as James Hirleman.

Major Crimes Cmdr. Thomas Stangrecki says the woman called police about 6:20 a.m. and said her boyfriend had a gun. She didn't report him making any threats.

Police tried to negotiate with the man and went in the house after hearing the gunshot.

The Rivers Casino owners have started paying toward a new arena for the Pittsburgh Penguins after the Pennsylvania Gaming Control filed a complaint demanding payment.Holdings Acquisition Co. L.P. agreed Thursday to pay $2.3 million to the city-county Sports & Exhibition Authority, which is building the $325 million Consol Energy Center. A licensing condition requires the casino to pay $7.5 million for 30 years to help fund the arena, and the payment deadline recently passed.The casino's owners, who rescued the stalled project last year, said they believed the first payment wasn't due until at least next year.
