SLIPPERY ROCK — Glenn Hazlet shook hands with his assistant coaches and hugged players as they walked off the field Saturday night.

For Hazlet, the first-year Slippery Rock High football coach, this win was more than 30 years in the making.

"It's pretty special," said Hazlet, after the Rockets dominated Reynolds in a 31-0 home win. "I'm proud of the kids and I'm so thankful for the coaches. They have all worked so hard."

Hazlet took over the Rockets program in late July following the resignations of Clyde Conti and Joe Lamenza.

For more than three decades, Hazlet coached football. Never, though, had he been a head coach until this season.

But the win finally came for Hazlet after an 0-4 start.

"This one was huge for him and for us," said senior quarterback Ayron Gallagher. "Starting 0-4 is not how I pictured my senior year going. But we kept a good attitude in practice of getting back to work and getting these next six."

Win No. 1 came in fine fashion.

Gallagher rushed for 195 yards and three touchdowns and the Slippery Rock defense surrendered a mere 64 yards and two first downs to Reynolds.

"We've played good run defense all year," Hazlet said.

Slippery Rock wasted little time in building a lead.

The Rockets scored on their first offensive play when John McAvoy burst through the Raiders' defense for 32 yards and a touchdown.

Dan Jeon added a short field goal and Gallagher scored the first of his three scoring runs, this one from 52 yards, to give the Rockets a 17-0 lead at halftime.

The defense did the rest.

"We play physical and everyone gets to the ball," Gallagher said. "We have a real intense coach in (Brian) Graham. We just play the way he wants us to play."

Gallagher scored on runs of 17 and 8 in the third quarter to finish off the rout.

The 195 yards rushing for Gallagher were a season high. McAvoy added 63 yards on just six carries and Justin Angerett added 58 yards on 14 carries for Slippery Rock (1-4, 1-2).

Reynolds' offense struggled throughout the game.

The Raiders' longest play from scrimmage covered 20 yards. The second longest play was 7.

Reynolds (1-4, 1-2) punted 10 times.

The Rockets will host winless Titusville next week, then travel to "We're getting better," Gallagher said. "I'm hoping we'll win these next couple of games and then see what happens."
