FARRELL — Police in western Pennsylvania are trying to figure out why an 18-year-old Arizona man was hogtied naked with duct tape in a rented house for four days before escaping last week.

Southwestern Mercer County Regional Police said Patrick Mendoza of Gilbert, Ariz., escaped from a rented home in Farrell on Friday. Police said Mendoza chewed through a plastic bag over his head and smashed a window with his head so his shouts for help could be heard.

Police said Mendoza was released from a Pittsburgh hospital Monday, and they've been interviewing him to determine what happened with his captivity. Police are still investigating Mendoza's connection to the residents of the home, who have not been charged.

Farrell is along the Ohio/Pennsylvania border, about 60 miles northwest of Pittsburgh.
