PITTSBURGH — Forward Chris Bourque, the son of Hall of Fame defenseman Ray Bourque, was claimed on waivers by the Penguins.
The 5-foot-8, 180-pound Bourque had 21 goals and 52 assists in 69 games with the Capitals' Hershey farm club and one goal in eight games with Washington last season.
Bourque, 23, was a second-round draft pick by Washington in 2004. He is scheduled to make $577,500 this season.
While the Penguins claimed Bourque, they lost forward Paul Bissonnette on waivers to Phoenix. He had one assist in 15 games with Pittsburgh last season.
Forwards Ryan Bayda and Chris Conner and defensemen Nate Guenin and Deryk Engelland went unclaimed after being waived by the Penguins and will be sent to their Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (AHL) farm club.
CLEVELAND — Eric Wedge was fired Wednesday as manager of the Cleveland Indians, who are in the final days of a terrible season that began with enormous expectations.Wedge will manage the last six games of his seventh year with Cleveland.General manager Mark Shapiro said he and owners Larry and Paul Dolan came to a collective decision on Wedge's future "fairly recently" and that Cleveland's coaches were told Tuesday night that they would not be retained for the 2010 season. Wedge is under contract for 2010.
