FOXBURG — Chris McNany doesn't look at the final score, especially one as ugly as Friday night's.

The first-year A-C Valley coach would rather look at other numbers instead of the 57-6 final score in the Falcons' loss to Moniteau.

He's focused on 6-0, as in the second-half score. He has his sights set on 3-1, as in the record A-C Valley has in the second half of games this season.

Baby steps. Baby steps.

"Rome wasn't built in a day," McNany said.

But Moniteau's blowout win was built in less than 12 minutes.

The Warriors scored six touchdowns in the first quarter to take a 41-0 lead and led 57-0 at halftime.

For Moniteau, the game was about breaking in a completely new look on defense.

Gone is the attacking 3-4 scheme. In is a 4-3 front that relies on zone coverage.

"We needed to come in and we needed to establish something," said Moniteau coach Jeff Campbell.

The Warriors (2-2) were coming off two lopsided losses of their own sandwiched around a Week 2 win. In the two losses, the 3-4 defense was gashed on the ground and through the air.

Something drastic needed to be done, and Campbell did just that, scrapping the defense that helped Moniteau get to the District 9 title game and to win the Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference a year ago for a completely new scheme.

"We looked at it. We didn't have the personnel to run the 3-4 and we had to get out of it," Campbell said. "We were much better. We were much more disciplined at it and we have the kids to run it."

The defense looked strong against A-C Valley (0-4), limiting the Falcons to minus-10 yards and no first downs in the first half.

Moniteau, meanwhile, rolled up more than 200 yards in the first half.

Field position played a big role in the Warriors' dominance. Moniteau ran only one play on its side of the 50 in the first two quarters.

James Shope ran for 123 yards on six carries and scored on runs of 29 and 38 yards.

Quarterback Kyle Armagost threw for 65 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 39 yards and three scores.

In the second half, A-C Valley, which has now lost 36 straight games, was able to compete.

Justin Loll rushed for 83 yards in the final two quarters and finished with 93. Playing with a broken left wrist, Michael Orrvick hauled in a 26-yard touchdown pass from Brian Jackson for the Falcons' only score.

A-C Valley outscored and outgained Moniteau in the second half — McNany's true measure of success this season.

"We came out hard in the second half," McNany said. "Obviously, the first half didn't go anywhere near the way we wanted it to. But, to be honest with you, we are playing with a JV team every night. It is a rough road, but we are making progress. Our kids won't quit and keep battling hard.

"The fight never goes away," McNany said. "Right now, we're just not at the level of the other teams."
