QB leads SV past Knoch
JEFFERSON TWP — Whether it's on the ground or through the air, Donny Holl has reached a comfort level in the Seneca Valley offense.
The Raiders quarterback accounted for four touchdowns — two rushing and two passing — in leading SV to a 26-14 win at Knoch Friday night.
With SV leading 20-7 at the start of the fourth quarter, the Raiders began a seven-play, 51-yard drive that ended with Holl hooking up with Andrew Smith for a 10-yard scoring pass.
Though the extra point failed, SV had a three-score lead with 8:48 left to play.
It proved to be too big a deficit for Knoch (0-4) to overcome, as the Knights added a Kyler Kenyon scoring run with just 11 seconds remaining.
Holl was 12 of 24 for 168 yards, completing passes to seven different receivers.
His first touchdown pass of the game went to Jordan Glaser early in the second quarter. The junior wideout laid out for the ball in the right corner of the end zone and held on as he hit the ground for a 13-0 lead.
Running back Troy Witt led SV (2-2) with three receptions for 67 yards.
"I don't look for just one guy," Donny Holl said. "I go to whoever is open. If that means going to four different receivers on four straight plays, that's fine. They all have great hands."
Holl's scoring runs came from 12 yards out in the first quarter and from four yards late in the second quarter to give the Raiders a 20-0 halftime edge.
"I'm comfortable with running or throwing the ball," Holl said. "On both touchdown runs tonight, our guard, Pat Kulp, blew up their linebacker. The line is rarely missing blocks and they're doing a great job."
The Knights cut SV's lead to 20-7 when Andrew Rumburg-Goodlin scored on a 10-yard run with 4:12 left in the third period.Knights coach Mike King saw better play from his team in the second half."Number one, we played better defense in the second half," he said. "The first half was just mistake after mistake. (Seneca Valley) throws a lot of different things at you and you can't make the mistakes we made."The Raiders were penalized 16 times for 145 yards."When we look at the film, I'm sure we're going to see the kids who made some bad decisions," said SV coach Don Holl. "But the main goal is to score more points than the other team and we did that."We were the more physical team tonight and I was pleased with that," he added.Kenyon, who made his second career varsity start at quarterback, completed 11 of 21 passes for 80 yards. He also rushed for 22 yards, including the 3-yard soring run."He proved he can mix it up with people from a physical standpoint, and that's important," King said. "That's important for us because we play in a physical conference."Both teams will begin conference play next Friday.Knoch travels to Franklin Regional while SV will play at North Allegheny.
