NORTH HUNTINGDON — Butler resident Logan Antill of Sewickley Academy made it to the WPIAL Class AA Girls Tennis finals at Norwin High Friday before bowing to Tanya Timko of Chartiers-Houston.
Antill, the No. 4 seed, fell to the second-seeded Timko 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
The No. 1 seed, Vincentian Academy's Elise Held, also a Butler resident, lost to No. 3 Cara Vaggio of Quaker Valley in straight sets in the consolation final.
PITTSBURGH — Newly elected Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, a noted baseball fan, threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the Dodgers-Pirates game Friday.Hatoyama didn't stand in front of the mound, as those throwing such pitches often do.Wearing a Pirates game jersey, he toed the rubber, went into a full windup and, like many Japanese pitchers, paused briefly in his delivery before throwing a low pitch that hit the dirt after crossing the plate.
DANVILLE, Calif. — Sophie Gustafson shot a 3-under 69 Friday to take a one-stroke lead over Lorena Ochoa, Maria Hjorth and Shanshan Feng in the CVS/pharmacy LPGA Challenge.Gustafson, the Swede who won the last of her four career LPGA Tour victories in 2003, had a 10-under 134 total. The top-ranked Ochoa shot a 67, Hjorth had a 66 and Feng a 67.
BEREA, Ohio — Cleveland rookie cornerback Coye Francies, incensed over a prank, threw a bucket of ice and at least one errant punch during a skirmish in the Browns' locker room.As the team returned from practice Friday, a dripping-wet Francies, who had been soaked by teammates, stormed into the locker room carrying a water bucket full of ice. Before he could be stopped, Francies tossed the ice on cornerback Brandon McDonald and swung his arms at safety Abram Elam, before nose tackle Shaun Rogers grabbed him and escorted him out a side door.
PHILADELPHIA — Donovan McNabb is doubtful to play Sunday when the Philadelphia Eagles host Kansas City because of a broken rib.Kevin Kolb will make his second straight start for the Eagles if McNabb can't go. Jeff Garcia could be the backup, though Michael Vick will play.
HOUSTON — Houston Texans receivers Andre Johnson and Jacoby Jones were fined by the NFL Friday for their roles in a fight during last Sunday's 34-31 win over Tennessee.Johnson was fined $7,500 for unnecessary roughness for taking Tennessee's Cortland Finnegan to the ground by the facemask after the play was over and Jones was fined $5,000 for entering the fight unnecessarily.Tennessee's Jason Jones was fined $5,000 for his part in the fight earlier this week.
