ADAMS TWP — Fox Chapel coach Bryan Deal knew his team was lucky to be trailing Mars by only seven points at halftime.

The only question was how was his squad going to turn it around in the second half?

With a steady dose of running back Montay Green and sophomore quarterback Noel Wilson, the Foxes ripped off enough big plays, including one touchdown from each of those players, in a 14-10 nonconference victory over the Planets Friday.

"We had to get on track," said Deal. "We have not won a lot of football games with adversity. We beat an excellent program."

Green rushed for 131 yards on 24 carries — and used runs of 28 and 25 yards on the two Foxes scoring drives to spark the team.

Mars had a 7-0 lead in the third quarter before Green started a drive with runs of 8 and 28 yards to put the Foxes at the Mars 26.

Wilson rushed for 13 yards, then threw a 10-yarder to Jullian Salerno before Green scored from 8 yards out to tie the score with 5:30 left in the quarter.

"Fox Chapel is a high-powered offense," said Mars coach Scott Heinauer. "Green, he would see one thing and run the other way. We stopped doing that and it helped.

"They would get it to him and he'd cut back. He's a big, physical kid," Heinauer added.

The Planets (2-2) regained the lead on the next possession when they went on a 13-play drive, which was capped by a 33-yard Chris Karns field goal with 10:02 remaining

Mars junior Austin Miele, whose performance was overshadowed in the loss, finished with 192 yards on 25 carries. He carried six times for 38 yards and the Planets converted a pair of third-down conversions to sustain the drive.

The Foxes (3-1) countered with a score of their own, giving them the lead for good.

A 25-yard run by Green and a 17-yard pass play to T.J. Shachner from Wilson moved the ball to the Mars 40. Green carried the next four plays for 10 yards, the last a 1-yarder on a fourth-and-1 at the 31 that kept possession to the Foxes.

Two plays later, Wilson bounced outside to score on a 30-yard run to make it 14-10.

Wilson was called for a taunting penalty on the play and Mars appeared to have a golden opportunity with 6:42 remaining, but a fumble on the kickoff was recovered by Fox Chapel at the 47-yard line.

"The key to the game was turnovers," said Heinauer. "If you make mistakes at a crucial point in the game ... and if you don't make plays and wrap guys up, it's going to hurt you."

After the Planets defense forced a three-and-out, Mars had one last chance, starting at its own 10-yard line with 3:53 left.

Guzak completed passes of 16 and 10 yards, and Miele had two carries for 10 yards to move the chains. When Randy Seebacher reeled off a 15-yard run, Mars had a first-and-10 at the FC 39.

Guzak, however, threw four straight incompletions and the Foxes ran out the clock.

"We let this one get away. We had opportunities and we didn't come through," said Heinauer. "We're just a little bit away. We're 2-2 and that's OK.

"We've got to go in next week and this doesn't matter because we all go back to 0-0. You have to win games in your conference," Heinauer added.

The Planets kick off the Allegheny Conference schedule next week against Highlands.

Notes: Miele scored on a 3-yard touchdown with 11:35 left in the second quarter. He had a 38-yard burst to close out the first quarter, then Seth Geyer had a 28-yard run on the first play of the second quarter before Miele's score. ... Randy Seebacher broke a 78-yard run on the first play of the Planets ensuing drive, but a holding call negated the effort.
