Grossman

Effie N. Grossman, 83, a resident of Orchard Manor in Grove City since 2006, formerly of Slippery Rock, died at 4:25 a.m. Monday at the Grove City Medical Center.

Born in Grove City, May 19, 1926, she was the daughter of John H. Coast and Barbara E. Downing Coast.

She attended West Sunbury High School and received her licensed practical nursing degree from Butler County Community College.

She was a homemaker and had worked in home health care for many years. She also worked at the former Cooper-Bessemer Co. in Grove City during World War II.

Mrs. Grossman was a member of the Branchton United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Methodist Women and a former Sunday school teacher.

She was a former den mother for Cub Scouts, a member of the West Sunbury Rebecca Lodge, a volunteer with special Olympics and an avid bowler and fisherman.

She married Horace C. Grossman Sr., Dec. 16, 1949, and William E. Applebee Aug. 16, 1945.

Surviving are three daughters, Bonnie J. Wallace and her husband, Clarence R. of Slippery Rock, Mary E. Spence of Butler, and Dale G. Miller and her husband, Donald F., of Anderson, S.C.; six sons, Harold J. Applebee and his wife, Sandy L., of Anderson, S.C., Horace C. Grossman Jr. and his wife, Dr. Mary M., of Grove City, John R. Grossman and his wife, Kimberly S., of Slippery Rock, Joseph D. Grossman and his wife, Kimberly A., of Mercer, Marvin L. Grossman and his wife, Judith A., of Prospect and Kenneth C. Grossman of Slippery Rock; 25 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Emma Jane Bell of Grove City, Mary Ann Duell and her husband, William, of Grove City and Anna Mae Heller and her husband, Pete, of Racine, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Horace, on Oct. 21, 2002, and William on Aug. 16, 1947; a grandson; a sister; and three brothers.

<B>GROSSMAN</B> — Friends of Effie N. Grossman, who died Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the <B>Jamison Funeral Home</B>, 117 N. Main St., Harrisville. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. James A. Lewis of the Branchton United Methodist Church officiating.
