LOWER BURRELL — A Westmoreland County city is under fire for launching fireworks celebrating the city's 50th anniversary from a cemetery. Lower Burrell City Clerk Kelly Cook says some residents were upset after learning 1,500 fireworks were launched from a vacant section of St. Mary's Cemetery, which is privately owned.

Cemetery officials say the city got permission, and organizers insist there was no disrespect intended and no damage done to graves.

Organizers say fireworks crews were careful not to walk on graves, which were covered to protect them from debris. Some flowers and flags were temporarily removed to make sure they weren't damaged. They were all replaced by cleanup crews on Sunday.

PITTSBURGH — A University of Pittsburgh researcher is getting $2.9 million from the federal government to study whether lymph nodes can be used to produce liver and pancreas cells in people with those diseased organs.Dr. Eric Lagasse is an expert in liver diseases and directs the Cancer Stem Cell Center, a joint venture of the university's McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine and its Cancer Institute.

WESTON, W.Va. — A Pennsylvania man accused of fatally shooting a turkey hunter has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor negligent shooting and no contest to felony wanton endangerment.Robert Tobias of Millersburg also pleaded guilty Wednesday to failure to render aid, also a misdemeanor. The 58-year-old Tobias faces more than six years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 5.Prosecutors said Tobias shot 32-year-old Shawn Stewart on April 27 as the Walkersville man was hunting turkeys near Stonewall Jackson Lake.Tobias said he shot at a turkey but missed. When he checked the shot's result, he discovered Stewart's body.
