Pitt's worry: Wilson's 326, not the Top 25
PITTSBURGH (— Too early in the season. Too much to think about this week.
Pitt is 3-0 for the first time since 2000, a good but anticipated start given the Panthers' strongest opponent was Navy. That hasn't been good enough to get the Panthers into the Top 25 and they dropped two spots among the teams also receiving votes in The Associated Press poll this week.
Given the Panthers occasionally have been ranked too high, too early — see 2004 — perhaps it's better for them that the voters are making them earn a place in the rankings.
"We're comfortable just doing what we're doing," coach Dave Wannstedt said. "We're just trying to win one more game and keep moving. The polls at this point mean nothing. It hasn't been a conversation in this building and it really won't be. We're three games into it."
Their fourth game, at North Carolina State (2-1) Saturday, should provide a better idea of where they belong — or whether they belong — in the rankings.
"Sure, we're 3-0 but, in my eyes, we haven't proven anything yet," defensive lineman Gus Mustakas said. "This is going to be a big test for us. A road game, and an ACC team."
And Russell Wilson.
Wilson has thrown 326 consecutive passes without being intercepted, an NCAA record he broke while going 26 for 36 for 345 yards during a 45-14 victory over Football Championship Subdivision opponent Gardner-Webb Saturday. This season, Wilson is 53 for 80 for 647 yards, eight touchdowns and no interceptions against Gardner-Webb, Murray State and South Carolina.
