MILLCREEK TWP, Erie County — Don Holl knew his defense would be challenged by facing Erie McDowell's flexbone offense — and the Trojans proved the Seneca Valley football coach's concerns were warranted.

McDowell scored on runs of 65, 84, 55, 32 and 13 in its 35-20 win over the Raiders Friday night at Gus Anderson Field.

Senior running back Dejon Young, who finished with 73 yards on 12 carries, scored both of his touchdowns in the final period, the last coming from 13 yards out to give his team its 15-point margin of victory.

The Trojans (2-0) got rolling on their third possession of the game when junior Kasey Chodubski took a pitch from quarterback Zach Greenawalt and raced 65 yards for the game's first score.

Sophomore slotback Greg Garmon scored on an 84-yard run on McDowell's next possession.

Despite racking up 333 rushing yards on 34 carries, McDowell's longest drive covered only six plays. It came midway through the final quarter and ended with a punt.

The Trojans totaled eight first downs to SV's 17.

"There's no question the big plays were brutal for our defense tonight," said Holl. "McDowell did not sustain many drives, but a lot of that is because they scored on big runs."

"We've had some breakdowns and are working to sustain drives, but this is an offense that can score on any play, and we proved it tonight," said Trojans coach Mark Soboleski.

The Raiders answered the Trojans' second score with one of their own.

Quarterback Donny Holl capped a 10-play, 54-yard drive with a 3-yard scoring run late in the second quarter and McDowell led 13-7 at halftime.

With the Raiders ground game proving ineffective for much of the game — 63 yards on 32 carries — the weight of SV's offense fell onto Holl's shoulders. He responded by completing 23 of 38 passes for 242 yards and one touchdown.

That score came on a 4-yard pass to tight end Andrew Smith that cut McDowell's lead to 21-14 late in the third quarter.

The Trojans picked off Holl twice late in the game when the Raiders, were desperate for a quick score, but he took another step forward in just his second varsity start.

"(McDowell) was putting seven, eight guys up on the line of scrimmage, just daring us to throw the ball, and we did," said Coach Holl. "I thought we threw the ball well tonight."

That included one pass from junior quarterback Aaron Pynos, who hit Jordan Glaser with a 12-yard touchdown strike, cutting the deficit to 28-20 with 7:48 left in the game.

Pynos had replaced Holl for one play while the latter was being treated for a bloody elbow.

Senior Pete Vicente led SV's receiving corps with eight catches for 66 yards,

"I loved the effort and I love our kids," said Coach Holl. "We hung in there tonight."

Garmon led all rushers with 149 yards on four carries.

The Raiders (0-2) will host Baldwin at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
