McDowell familiar to Raider coach Holl

The Seneca Valley football team's next opponent — McDowell High School — is a very familiar one to Don Holl.

The Raiders' head coach grew up in Erie, played and later coached at McDowell's biggest rival, Cathedral Prep.

Including postseason play, Holl owns a 5-2 career coaching record against the Trojans.

His first road game as SV's coach will take place when the Raiders visit the Trojans Friday night.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Gus Anderson Field.

"I know a lot of people back there, it's my hometown," Holl said of Erie. "When I was at Prep, McDowell was always

the game. But I understand that's not the case here at Seneca Valley."Our goal is to build some things here and Friday's game is just another step along the way," Holl added. The Trojans opened the 2009 season with a 14-7 win over Cathedral Prep last week.Nine different players contributed to McDowell's total of 286 rushing yards, led by senior quarterback Zach Greenawalt's 96 yards on 16 carries. Junior running back Jeremy Barroner added a 72-yard touchdown run and ended the game with 87 yards on six carries.Greenawalt was a reserve running back last season and started at free safety in McDowell's 38-33 loss at Seneca Valley early in the campaign. With the graduation of quarterback A.J. Fenton — District 10's top rusher in 2008 with 1,933 yards and 24 touchdowns — Greenawalt has taken over as the signal caller of the Trojans' flexbone offense, a formation derived from the wishbone."(Greenawalt) is 6-2 and weighs 205 pounds and he can throw the ball a mile," said second-year McDowell coach Mark Soboleski. "But we're a running team. When we do throw it, it's to get the big play."We have three starters back on the offensive line and Zach has the opportunity to have a great season," he added. Those returning starters include right guard Dusty Galich (6-3, 260), left guard Tyler Covatto (5-11, 270) and center Greg Koester (6-1, 260)."McDowell's physical up front and the flexbone is pretty challenging to prepare for," said Holl.In last week's 17-7 loss to Norwin, the Raiders gave up 223 rushing yards, 114 of them coming on two plays.Still, the Raiders were tied at 7 with Norwin late in the game."If you give up seven points through 45 minutes of play like we did last week, you should win the game," Holl said.Seneca Valley's offense totaled 378 yards, though the team managed just the one score."They had trouble getting the ball in the end zone, but they moved the ball up and down the field," said Soboleski of the Raiders. "For a team learning a new offense, that's impressive."SV junior quarterback Donny Holl was solid in his debut, completing 10 of 15 passes for 140 yards."The biggest positive was he made good decisions and managed the game well," said Coach Holl. "He can play better and we can play better, but there were definitely positives that we can build on."SV junior halfback Jack Graham had a great first start of his varsity career, gaining 220 yards from scrimmage (149 rushing, 71 receiving). One player hoping to get back in SV's lineup at some point is senior wide receiver/running back Evan Hetzel, who is out with an undisclosed injury suffered last month.

Note: McDowell is an associate member of the WPIAL's Foothills Conference for the second straight year, meaning the Trojans will face McKeesport, Gateway, Penn-Trafford, Hempfield, Latrobe, Norwin and Connellsville later this season.
