Tourneys close tennis season at BCC
PENN TWP — The Butler Country Club tennis season is ending with a flourish this weekend.
The 10th annual Dave Barnes Pro-Am, renamed last year after BCC's first club pro and longtime Butler High tennis coach, takes place at 2 p.m. Sunday.
The first Jamie McCandless Memorial Adult-Junior Tournament will be played at 1:30 p.m. Monday — the season's final day of tennis at the club.
"Dave Barnes is recognized as the father of tennis in Butler and it's right that we honor his name with a tournament," said club pro Whitney Snyder.
Monday's event is in honor of a popular BCC tennis player killed in an automobile accident last summer at age 24.
"We wanted to come up with a popular family-type of event to honor Jamie's memory with," Snyder said. "We came up with a unique format where the adult-junior doubles team can't be related in any way.
"We forced club members ages 8 to 18 to come out of their comfort zone and ask adults they don't know if he or she would play with them. The adults are so flattered that they say yes."
Members of the McCandless family will present a trophy to the winning team.
The Dave Barnes Pro-Am features eight teams of three players each: one pro, one BCC male tennis player and one female.
At 2 p.m., the pro and female player will compete in mixed doubles. The pro and male player then will compete in men's doubles.
Points from both doubles events will be combined to determine the champion trio.
"Players like that format because nobody's ever out of it," Snyder said.
Last year's champions were pro Bill Pilardi, Ann Gatty and Chuck Lenz. Lenz is the only one of the three back this year.
Nobody knows who he or she will be teamed with until the day of the event.
This year's pros include "Koach" Tim Conroy of Finleyville, Brian Miklavic of Butler, Trenton Goerk of Saxonburg, George Tipton of Wexford, Kenny Nieser of Fox Chapel, Trevor Heck of Sewickley, Matt Riva of Carnegie and Jose Raymundo of Pittsburgh.
The BCC male competitors include Lenz, Melissa King, Steve Gierl, Jack Boros, Kit Barkus, Stefan Kemp, Evan Kowalski and Keith Maust.
"Melissa is too strong a player to be placed in the women's division," Snyder said.
The female players are Janet Platt, Kristen Petcash, Nance Conlon, Abby Conlon, Katie Conlon, Laura Santora, Mary Jo Sylvia and Rachel Diehl.
Abby and Katie Conlon are members of Knoch's girls tennis team, coached by Nieser.
