JACKSON TWP — Whether it was fumbles, penalties, or poor special teams play, the Seneca Valley football team watched potential points slip away all night long.

With 21 seconds remaining in the game and trailing Norwin 10-7, SV kicker Will Hugo lined up to try a 42-yard field goal that would have tied the game.

The ball never got past the line of scrimmage, as Norwin's Tyler Lukart broke through and blocked the kick.

His teammate, Andrew Cockeram, caught the deflected ball and raced 65 yards for the final score in the Knights' 17-7 victory Friday at NexTier Stadium.

"You really don't want to put a kid out there in that situation, with the game on the line and no time left on the clock, with that kind of pressure," said SV coach Don Holl. "I have to do a better job of making sure we score a touchdown next time."

Besides the blocked field goal attempt, the Raiders had drives end twice on a fumble, once on a penalty and another was capped with a missed 25-yard field goal try in the third period.

"We did not lose the game because of the blocked field goal at the end," added Holl. "It came down to not finishing in the red zone."

The game was tied at 7-all from late in the first quarter until Norwin's Brandon Horsman booted an 18-yard field goal with 2:12 left in the game.

SV's defense stood tall, denying the Knights a touchdown on two straight running plays from inside the 5-yard line, forcing Norwin to settle for the three points.

The Raiders began their last drive on their own 29.

After an incomplete pass on first down, quarterback Donny Holl hit Jack Graham down the left sideline.

The junior halfback cut toward the middle of the field and turned the play into a 42-yard gain down to Norwin's 29.

An 11-yard pass to Jake Double moved the ball closer, but Donny Holl was sacked for a 9-yard loss on second down and a busted play followed on third down before Hugo's field goal attempt.

"It's nice to come out of a tight game with a win," said Knights coach Dan Conwell. "(Seneca Valley) is one heck of an offense to prepare for. We're not the biggest defense and we have to limit the big plays. For the most part, I thought we did that tonight."

One player the Knights had trouble containing was Graham, who totaled 220 yards from scrimmage (149 rushing, 71 receiving).

Graham's 31-yard run late in the first quarter set up Holl's 7-yard touchdown run on a bootleg play.

"Jack's an explosive kid," said Coach Holl. "He had never started a varsity game, but he showed up tonight and that's a credit to him."

Donny Holl also was making his first varsity start at quarterback and the junior turned in a solid performance, completing 10 of 15 passes for 140 yards.

"I'm sure there will be some things that look good on tape and others that we will have to work on," Coach Holl said of Donny's play. "We'll take a look at it."

The Knights wasted little time getting on the scoreboard.

On the second play from scrimmage, fullback Joel DeFelice took the handoff from Tim Petro and raced through the middle of the Raiders' defense for a 67-yard touchdown.

DeFelice ended the game with 108 yards on nine carries.

Seneca Valley heads to Erie McDowell next Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
