NEW YORK — NFL commissioner Roger Goodell foresees an uncapped 2010 season as the league and the players' union negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement.

Goodell said Thursday owners are preparing for no salary cap next season, citing the lack of progress in talks with the NFLPA. Last year, owners opted out of the CBA that was reached in 2006. That agreement included no salary cap in its final year, which both sides believed would spark serious negotiations toward a new contract.

TOLEDO, Ohio — The first American to orbit the Earth is joining another select group. Former fighter pilot and Ohio native John Glenn and his wife, Annie, will dot the "i" Saturday when Ohio State hosts the Midshipmen.The Glenns will get the honor at halftime when the Ohio State alumni band, marching in formation, spells out "Ohio" on the field.Only a handful of non-band members have dotted the "i," including comedian Bob Hope and golfer Jack Nicklaus.

MADISON, Wis. — A federal judge sentenced former major league pitcher Jerry Koosman to six months in prison Thursday for not paying his taxes.Prosecutors say Koosman, a former All-Star who helped the New York Mets win the 1969 World Series, didn't pay federal income taxes for 2002, 2003 and 2004. He pleaded guilty in May to willfully failing to file taxes for 2002, a misdemeanor, in a deal with prosecutors.U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb found that Koosman cost the government as much as $80,000. She could have sentenced him to a full year in prison but chose to cut that in half and add a year of supervised release.

MINNEAPOLIS — Kurt Rambis and Bill Laimbeer were perhaps the two biggest agitators on the court when the Los Angeles Lakers and Detroit Pistons went at each other in the 1980s.Now the blue collar of those glitzy "Showtime" Lakers and the lead intimidator of Detroit's feared "Bad Boys" are teaming up to try and turn around one of the NBA's most downtrodden franchises.Rambis announced Thursday that Laimbeer, former Sacramento head coach Reggie Theus and former Celtics assistant GM Dave Wohl will serve under him as assistants on the Minnesota Timberwolves. J.B. Bickerstaff also will be retained from Kevin McHale's staff.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Carl Edwards will race this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway despite breaking his right foot playing Frisbee.Edwards is on crutches but was cleared to race in both the Nationwide and Sprint Cup Series by doctors from the University of Missouri. He is from Columbia, Mo., and was injured in a hometown game Wednesday night.
