The Butler girls tennis team is striving to get back to the playoffs.

Veteran coach Alisa Green is leaning on senior leadership to get the job done.

It all starts with top singles player Carolyn Shetter.

"She's been our No. 1 singles player for four years," said Green of Shetter, who was a sophomore the last time Butler made the WPIAL team playoffs in 2007.

Other returning seniors and starters include Heather Santa (No. 2 singles) and the No. 1 doubles tandem of Madison Kerr and Rosel Nesbitt.

Another senior, Shannon Gallagher, broke a foot and is out indefinitely.

"We've got a lot of seniors and returning starters," said Green. "We're looking pretty strong this season."

I'm planning on playing the girls all over the place. A girl could be playing singles one match and doubles the next."

<B>Coach:</B> Mark Varlotta, ninth season<B>2008 record:</B> The Planets finished below .500.<B>Singles:</B> 1-Kaitlyn Craig (freshman), 2-Alanna Michalski (freshman), 3-Shireen Ghaznavi (freshman)<B>Doubles:</B> The No. 1 and 2 doubles squads will be made up of a combination of senior Katie Andreascik, juniors Chelsea Then, Ellen Limback and Madison DuBrock, sophomore Brittany Bunner and freshman Liz Carpenter<B>Varlotta says:</B> "This is the strongest freshman class we've had since I've been here. We'd like to end the season over .500. That's a realistic goal."
