NORTH PLAINS, Ore. — Rookie M.J. Hur made a 6-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole of the Safeway Classic on Sunday to beat Suzann Pettersen for her first LPGA Tour victory. Hur shot a final-round 65, while Pettersen and veteran Michele Redman each shot a 67 to finish at 13-under 203 and set up the playoff. Hur, who competed on the Futures Tour last season, had played in 13 previous tournaments this season, making the cut six times.

BOSTON — Tedy Bruschi is retiring after a 13-year career marked by an inspiring return to the New England Patriots as a starting linebacker eight months after a stroke.A person familiar with his decision told The Associated Press on Sunday night that the 36-year-old Bruschi will announce his retirement at a news conference Monday morning. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no announcement had been made.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama coach Nick Saban signed a three-year contract extension, athletic director Mal Moore said Saturday. Saban signed an eight-year contract when he joined the Crimson Tide in 2007. The extension takes him through 2017.In two seasons, Saban has led the Crimson Tide to a 19-8 record, including a 12-2 record last season that earned a Southeastern Conference Western Division title, a trip to the Sugar Bowl and a final ranking of sixth. The Tide open Saban's third season against Virginia Tech on Sept. 5 in Atlanta.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The University of Michigan announced Sunday that it has launched an investigation into allegations that its football program regularly violates NCAA rules limiting how much time players can spend on training and practice.The announcement from Michigan athletic director Bill Martin came after a Detroit Free Press article in which players from the 2008 and 2009 teams said the amount of time they spend on football during the season and in the offseason greatly exceeds NCAA limits. The players spoke to the newspaper on condition of anonymity.NCAA rules allow players to spend eight hours a week on mandatory workouts during the offseason and 20 hours a week during the season.
