HERMAN — An unidentified Summit Academy football player was injured in a practice drill and transported by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital.
The player was hurt during a tackling drill recently and was flown to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, said Dick Roberts, a spokesman for Summit Academy.
"He's not paralyzed," said Roberts of Roberts Communications in Pittsburgh, a public relations firm that represents all of the Academy schools in the Pittsburgh area. "He could wiggle his toes and was squeezing hands. He had a strong pulse in both legs."
Roberts did not know the name of the injured player.
Four teams have been added to the adult baseball tournament scheduled for Butler over Labor Day weekend.The addition of the Allegheny Pirates, Rochester Bulldogs, Sto-Rox Hurricanes and South Oakland brings the number of teams to 12. Games will be played at Pullman Park, Highfield Park and Butler County Community College.
DETROIT — The Slippery Rock University volleyball team dropped its first two matches of the season at the Warrior Invitational at Wayne State University, falling to Aquinas 3-1, then 3-2 against Urbana (Ohio) Friday.Keira Peoples led The Rock with 14 kills in the opener, while Kristin Slavoski and Hannah McShea added 11 kills each. McShea also had 14 digs and three aces.In the second match, SRU took the first two sets before Urbana battled back. McShea had 20 kills and 18 digs while Kaylee Smith had 19 kills, three assists, two aces and 21 digs.
PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh suspended forward Gilbert Brown from the men's basketball team for the fall semester because of academic reasons.The school made the announcement Friday.Brown, a redshirt junior, played in 32 games as a reserve last season when the Panthers went 31-5, reached No. 1 for three weeks and fell one win shy of the Final Four. He scored in double figures five times and averaged 5.4 points and 3.1 rebounds.The 6-foot-6, 200-pound Brown could be eligible to rejoin the team Dec. 20.
LANDOVER, Md. — New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has a sore throwing shoulder, the result of a crushing hit by Washington Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth.Brady's right shoulder was pressed to the ground by Haynesworth on an incomplete pass late in the first half of Friday night's preseason game.Brady went to the bench, where he flexed and rotated his arm as the half came to a close. He did not play in the second half, even though most of the first-team offense returned for the first drive of the third quarter.
