Concert will benefit clinic
BUTLER TWP — A gala benefit concert benefiting The Community Health Clinic of Butler County on Oct. 3 will feature several world-renowned musicians, three of whom hail from Butler.
The event, sponsored by the Endowment for Butler County, will be at 7:30 p.m. at Butler County Community College's Succop Theater.
Scheduled to perform are The Triton Horn Trio, which includes horn player and Butler native William Purvis, as well as A Taste of Jazz, a trio which includes Butler natives Jim Pugh on trombone and Jim Cunningham playing trumpet.
A Taste of Jazz will be supported by The Trinity Jazz Orchestra, a nonprofit group of professional musicians based in Western Pennsylvania.
"All of these musicians, who are internationally known, are donating their time and talent to this, which I think is tremendous," said Jean Purvis, William's mother and secretary of the clinic's board of directors.
"My son and his wife, Mihae, visited the clinic last fall and were so impressed that they wanted to do a benefit concert for it."
Pianist Mihae Lee and violinist Ani Kavafian will perform with Purvis as The Triton Horn Trio.
Jazz guitarist Shawn Purcell joins Pugh and Cunningham on A Taste of Jazz.
Jean Purvis said the clinic hopes to raise about $40,000 for its general fund by filling all of the Succop Theater's 442 seats. The concert is one of only a handful of fundraising events promoted by the clinic since its January 2008 opening.
"We get help from a few foundations, and we depend on the philanthropy of the butler community. Butler Memorial Hospital, as well, has been extremely helpful," she said.
The clinic's relationship with the hospital is mutually beneficial, as the clinic treats those without medical insurance, saving them a trip to the emergency room for routine care.
Jean Purvis said the event's organization has taken a long time and a lot of work by clinic committee members because of the difficulty of finding a common open spot in all of the musicians' schedules as well as an appropriate venue.
"It is amazing to get all of these musicians in one place at one time. We knew from the start we wanted the Succop Theater, too," she said.
The Endowment for Butler County, which donated $18,000 to the clinic at its inception, usually supports nonprofit programs, and does not get involved with fundraisers. However, the organization made an exception for what it sees as a worthy cause.
"We don't normally do this, but we felt so strongly about the clinic's work and that this sponsorship could be used to attract more monies to the clinic," said Amy Beiler, president of the endowment.
General admission tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door, while VIP tickets, which include preferred seating and a reception to meet the artists after the performance, are $50.
