Carl Laverne Rettig, 88, of Butler died at 11:01 p.m. Friday in The Good Samaritan Hospice at Concordia.

Born Sept. 22, 1920, in Butler, he was the son of the late Charles Adam and Mary Protzman Rettig.

He was a member of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Mr. Rettig was employed as a blacksmith in the forge shop at Butler Armco. He retired in 1980.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He was a member of VFW Post 249 in Butler and American Legion Post 778 in Lyndora.

He was a member of the Tri-state Music Association and Tanglewood Senior Center. He enjoyed camping.

He was married to Margaret G. Wagner, who preceded him in death on May 16, 1989.

He is survived by a son, Jeffrey L. Rettig and his wife, Margie, of Butler; two grandchildren, Sarah Lujetic and her husband, Tim, and Adam Rettig; a great-granddaughter, Olivia Lujetic; a brother, Floyd Rettig and his wife, Virginia, of Butler; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
