SHANGHAI — Y.E. Yang says his win over Tiger Woods at the HSBC Champions in 2006 was a major factor in setting up his victory over the world No. 1 last week in the PGA Championship that made him the first Asian golfer to claim a major.

Yang will meet Woods again at this year's HSBC Champions in November, along with defending champion Sergio Garcia and world No. 2 Phil Mickelson.

Yang said in a statement that the 2006 win set the stage for greater achievements because it gave him the courage to pursue loftier goals, like playing on the PGA Tour.

DENVER — Former AL MVP Jason Giambi signed a minor league contract with the Colorado Rockies, and he could be back in the major leagues in as little as a week.The 38-year-old Giambi reported to Triple-A Colorado Springs, where he hit several home runs during batting practice. He said his troublesome right thigh was pain-free and that he was hoping for a Sept. 1 call-up to help the Rockies with their pennant push.Colorado holds a four-game lead in the NL wild-card race.

CINCINNATI — William J. Williams Sr., one of the owners of the Cincinnati Reds from their Big Red Machine days, died Sunday night. He was 93.Williams was part of a small group that bought the team in 1966 and celebrated back-to-back World Series championships in 1975-76. His family sold controlling interest in the team in 1985.

MIAMI — Michael Beasley of the Miami Heat is being treated for depression-related issues at a Houston rehabilitation facility, a person briefed on the situation told The Associated Press.Beasley checked into the facility last week, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of privacy concerns. It's unknown how long Beasley will remain at the facility, or whether he will be available when the Heat open training camp on Sept. 28.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Three-time reigning NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson donated $150,000 in grants to four Charlotte-area school systems.The grants are from the Jimmie Johnson Foundation, and available to schools in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg, Mooresville, Cabarrus County and Iredell-Statesville school systems.

UPPER ST. CLAIR — Rob McClellan of Butler Country Club, along with amateurs Eric Lenyk, Jefff Bauer and Geoff Petterson, captured the Nike 27 Hole Scramble at the St. Clair Country Club Main Course Monday.The foursome fired an 82 (30-27-25) to defeat Longue Vue Club professional Steve Antenucci and amateurs Ben Rathfon, Jeff Troutman and Shawn Will by two strokes.The Treesdale Golf and Country Club's Joe Boros and Travis Dickson each lead a contingent that tied for eighth place.Boros, along with Doug Stadler, Mike Morrison and Alan Parrish carded an 88 (28-33-27) as did Dickson, Eric Cunningham, Chris Hart and Bob Kordenbrock (31-29-28).
