IN BRIEF
PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh's new slot machine casino had the third busiest opening day of any of Pennsylvania's new gambling halls.
Officials say gamblers wagered about $14 million — or some $216 per second — in the first 18 hours the Rivers Casino was open. It opened for business at noon Sunday.
The wagers generated $1.29 million in gross terminal revenue, a fancy phrase that means that's how much gamblers lost.
By comparison, the Sands casino is Bethlehem had a $1.62 million take when it opened in May. The casino at The Meadows harness racing track about 15 miles south of Pittsburgh grossed $1.48 million when it opened in May.
