The Outdoor Discovery Series sponsored by the Butler County Parks and Recreation Department will feature a martial arts demonstration at 7 p.m. today in the Masonic Shelter at Alameda Park, off New Castle Road. The series will conclude for the summer with a program on whitetail deer at 7 p.m. Aug. 13 in the Carousel Shelter at Alameda. Admission is free. Call 724-284-5383.
Moraine State Park will be the site of "Kayak Nature Float" at 10 a.m. Saturday. This entry-level kayaking program is designed to meet the needs of those more interested in an easy peaceful experience. Meet the park naturalist at the Old 422 launch area off old Route 422. Participants can take their own kayaks or borrow one of Moraine's kayaks. To reserve a kayak or register, call 724-368-8811. "Magical Monarch Butterflies" is planned for 1:30 p.m. Sunday. McConnells Mill State Park, Slippery Rock Township, just over the Butler County line into Lawrence County, will be the site of "Wild Teas" at 2 p.m. Saturday. Meet in the courtyard beside the Old Mill. "Geology & Industrial History" will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday. Join park staff for this relatively easy hike to the cascading waterfalls in Hell's Hollow. Meet at the Hell's Hollow parking lot. The Mill is open through Labor Day featuring the restored rolling gristmill from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Fridays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Interpretive tours of the historic mill, which include a corn grinding demonstration and last about 45 minutes, will be available at 1 and 2 p.m. Fridays and 1 and 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
