ERIE — Roy Gallagher, retired for five years after winning an unprecedented three state titles as a player/coach, is pitching in the Class C state championship modified-pitch tournament this weekend.
Gallagher is the only player in ASA Softball history to hold titles in all three divisions.
He holds several records in the Fieldhouse Modified Softball League, located in Jefferson Township, including career pitching and coaching wins and career hits.
Gallagher will pitch for Sheerbaum Construction of the Culmerville Modified Softball League this weekend.
ALTOONA — St. Jude Golf Club member Nathan Smith won the USGA Amateur Sectional Thursday at Sinking Valley Country Club.Smith shot a 69-65-134 in the 36-hole event, besting runner-up Brinson Paolini of Virginia Beach, Va., by two strokes.
PITTSBURGH — Mars senior Jason Fitzpatrick shot a 1-over-par 36 in the rain-shortened Kings Restaurants Tri-State PGA Junior Golf Tournament recently at Highland Country Club.Fitzpatrick's score in the nine-hole event won the boys 17-and-18 division and qualifies him for the Tri-State Junior PGA Championship Wednesday at Mystic Rock.
FRANKLIN — April Brandt of Chicora won the junior class of the John Ruditis Memorial Horseshoe Tournament recently in Franklin.She had five wins and no defeats in her first tournament. Jerry Jamison of Tarentum went 7-0 to win Class C and Carl Ealy of Herman pitched the highest single-game percentage in Class B.All three pitch for HT's Spillway in the Butler County Horseshoe League.
LYTHAM ST. ANNES, England — Catriona Matthew picked up five strokes to par in a brilliant three-hole stretch Friday in the Women's British Open.Playing 10 weeks after having her second child, the Scot followed an eagle on the par-5 11th with a hole-in-one on the 12th and added a birdie on the par-4 13th.She finished with a 5-under 67 for a share of the second-round lead with Giulia Sergas at 3-under 141. Sergas also shot a 67.
STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — Venus Williams defeated Maria Sharapova 6-2, 6-2 at the Bank of the West Classic on Friday night.Australia's Samantha Stosur, winner of 22 WTA doubles titles and no singles titles, provided the biggest stunner, though, beating Serena Williams.
