John R. Henninger, formerly of Butler, died June 11 of Alzheimer's disease. He was 84.

He was born in Butler, in 1925, to Mary Helen Johnston Henninger and Zeno Frederick Henninger and had two sisters, Nancy Kloepfer and Joan Robinson who preceded him in death.

Survivors include his daughter, Christine Nordenson of Eugene, Ore.; two sons, Zeno Henninger of Echternachenbruck, Germany, and John Henninger of Colorado Springs, Colo., from his first wife, Shirley May Herold; and three grandchildren. His wife, Catherine, preceded him in death in 2006.

He graduated from Butler High School and attended the University of Pennsylvania.

As a World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Navy Reserves from 1943 through 1946. His service aboard six ships carried him across the North Atlantic, into the Pacific and through the Mediterranean. His decorations include the Victory, American Campaign, European-African and Asian-Pacific medals.

He was employed as an officer in the People's Telephone Corp. of Butler and was a lifelong member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church and the Butler Country Club.

<B>HENNINGER</B> — A memorial service for John R. Henninger, who died Thursday, June 11, 2009, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 29, at the Covenant Presbyterian Church, Butler.Remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the Covenant Presbyterian Church, Butler.
