Swartzlander returns to grab Modified win

BUFFALO TWP — Brian Swartzlander welcomed himself back to Lernerville Speedway Friday night.

The Leechburg driver of the No. 83 Modified, making his first appearance at the Sarver track since being sidelined by a concussion six weeks ago, claimed his first feature win there since opening night.

Ed Lynch Jr. of Apollo won his 100th career feature at the track, his 99th in a Sprint car, starting 12th and passing Andy Priest on the 21st lap.

Lynch has won six features here this season.

"This one feels really, really good," Swartzlander said. "The car was fantastic. I didn't know if I'd ever get to victory lane again."

Swartzlander suffered a major concussion in a wreck May 22 at Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Motor Speedway. He was cleared to return to racing last weekend and finished sixth in the feature at Raceway 7.

Friday marked Swartzlander's second racing appearance since the concussion.

"It seemed like forever," he said of the layoff. "I never missed time (racing) before. I felt OK. I guess the tests were showing otherwise."

Swartzlander started the feature from the fifth spot and passed Slippery Rock's Dave Murdick for second on Turn 3 of the 10th lap.

Del Rougeux Jr. of Frenchville started in the front row and held the lead until the 13th lap, when he had to pit with a flat tire. Swartzlander inherited the lead and never lost it.

Jeremiah Shingledecker, who started 12th in the 16-car field, finished second. Kevin Bolland started 11th and finished third.

"There weren't a lot of cars out there, but it was still a tough race because there were a lot of good cars," Shingledecker said. "I had a little bobble that was my fault."

Bolland never had a chance to get his car set up for the feature. On the final lap of their heat race, Shingledecker's car rolled over Bolland's left rear tire, causing damage near the wheel.

"We still had the car on the jacks trying to fix it when they called us to line up for the feature," Bolland said. "We couldn't get the set-up we wanted."

Bolland said the corners were rough and might have been causing flat tires. Murdick, running third at the time, joined Rougeux in pitting with a flattened tire.

"I don't know if it was the corners. This track's been rougher than that," Swartzlander said. "I spotted some loose metal on the track and some cars may have run over it. I told the (track officials) about it."

In the Late Model feature, Lynn Geisler of Cranberry Township captured his 108th feature win at the Sarver oval when he passed Alex Ferree on lap 16 after Ferree broke his shock.

Ferree still passed Gregg Satterlee in the points race as Satterlee did not run Friday night.

Murdick finished second in the race, followed by Gary Lyle, John Garvin and Chuck Sarver, who crossed with a career-best finish. There were only 12 Late Models in the pits.

Murdick and Sarver were the only two drivers with five laps left in their Late Model heat. Murdick beat Sarver for the checkered flag.

"That was weird. I was never involved in anything like that before," Murdick said. "I'm supposed they didn't checker the thing with five laps left. I'd have settled for second in that situation."

Lynch claimed his seventh heat race of the season earlier in the night.

Other races did not end by presstime Friday. Complete results will appear in Monday's edition.
