FAIRVIEW TWP — A Chicora woman suffered moderate injuries June 21 when the horse she was riding on West Slippery Rock Road was struck from behind by a pickup truck.

According to state police, Stacy J. Stoughton, 39, was riding her horse when a pickup truck driven by Brandon K. Shirley, 27, of Chicora came up behind.

Because both Stoughton and Shirley were in the westbound lane facing the sunset, police said, Shirley was unable to see the horse and rider and struck them without swerving.

The impact threw Stoughton from the horse, which later died at the scene. Stoughton was taken by ambulance to Butler Memorial Hospital.

Shirley was not injured.

No charges will be filed, according to state police.

The last day to pay 2009 Butler city real estate and per capita taxes at face value is Tuesday.Payments will be received at the city treasurer's office, 140 W. North St., between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Payments postmarked by June 30 or received in the drop box outside the city building by 8:30 a.m. Wednesday also will be accepted.Any taxes paid after will be assessed a 10 percent penalty.Payments must be accompanied by the original tax card or include a $10 duplicate card fee.
