PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins celebrated Father's Day a weekend late by drafting three players with NHL lineage.
On the second day of the NHL draft Saturday, the Stanley Cup champions chose Philip Samuelsson, the son of former defenseman Ulf Samuelsson, and Andy Bathgate, the grandson of Hall of Famer Andy Bathgate Sr. — one of the original Penguins players in 1967.
They also chose high school defenseman Alex Velischek, the son of Randy Velischek, who played 509 NHL games for Minnesota, New Jersey and Quebec from 1982-92.
JOHANNESBURG — Brazil's "Beautiful Game" came alive in the second half Sunday with three comeback goals in a 3-2 win over the United States in the Confederations Cup final.Luis Fabiano scored two of the goals and Lucio added the third in the 84th minute to give Brazil its second straight Confederations Cup title and third overall.But it was all looking good for the Americans, playing in the men's final of a FIFA tournament for the first time, in the first half when Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan gave the team a 2-0 halftime lead.
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Jiyai Shin picked up her fifth title in 11 months with a seven-stroke victory at the Wegmans LPGA.The 21-year-old South Korean shot a 1-under 71 to finish at 17-under 271.Kristy McPherson and Yani Tseng each shot a 66, the day's best score, to surge into a second-place tie at 10 under.
EUGENE, Ore. — Shawn Crawford blew away the field in the 200-meter finals at U.S. track and field championships in a wind-aided time of 19.73 seconds.Allyson Felix joined Crawford as America's other 200-meter champion. A heavy favorite to win her fifth national title, Felix didn't disappoint, finishing in 22.02 (also wind-aided) to edge Muna Lee. Marshevet Hooker finished third.The 31-year-old Crawford blew away newcomer Charles Clark by .27 seconds to win his fourth national title, dating to 2001.
NEW YORK — Rachel Alexandra may need to run against the boys just to find some competition. The Preakness winner romped to a 19 1/4-length victory in the $300,000 Mother Goose on Saturday, splitting Malibu Prayer and Flashing on the far turn at Belmont Park and pulling away down the long front stretch to win in a stakes-record 1:46.33.
