NEW CASTLE — Ryan Prokay of Slippery Rock carded a course record 6-under-par 66 recently to win Division B of the P.J. Boatwright Junior Qualifier at Mohawk Trails Golf Course.
Prokay won his division by four strokes over runner-up Michael Pope.
ADAMS TWP — The Mars Athletic Hall of Fame recently announced the nine members who will make up the Class of 2009.They include: Ryan Salazar (baseball, Class of 1989), Tim Clark (track and field, 1973), Nancy Molnar Raymond (basketball, 1980), Rachael Brooks Tilko (cross country, 1980), Julie Weller Dunsworth (basketball, 1970), Jaime Lynn (basketball, 1999), Kelsie Hess Vernot (track and field, 1993), Mike Knox (baseball, 1977) and Joe McKinney (football, 1997).They will be inducted at a ceremony at Mars Middle School Sept. 18 before the Planets' home football game against Plum.
LEXINGTON, Ky.— Preakness winner Rachel Alexandra is heading to Belmont Park after all.Co-owner Jess Jackson's Stonestreet Farms announced in a news release Wednesday that his filly will return to the track June 27 in the Mother Goose Stakes, nearly three weeks after Jackson decided to rest his star rather than run her in the Belmont Stakes.Calvin Borel, the filly's regular jockey, will ride her in the Mother Goose.The sensational filly beat the boys in the Preakness for her sixth victory in a row, all with Borel aboard. The 1Z\,-mile Mother Goose for 3-year-olds will be her first race against fillies since she dominated in the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill by 20Z\v lengths.
NEW YORK — Jose Canseco plans to file a class-action lawsuit against Major League Baseball and the players' association, saying Wednesday he's been ostracized for going public with tales of steroids use in the sport.Canseco said that he has discussed the suit with lawyers and intends to enlist Sammy Sosa and Rafael Palmeiro to join in the suit.Canseco said the basis of the suit would be "lost wages — in some cases, defamation of character."
MINNEAPOLIS — Kevin McHale is out as coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves.New president of basketball operations David Kahn announced the move Wednesday, ending McHale's 15-year stint with the Timberwolves. In a statement issued before a news conference, Kahn lauded McHale's contributions as an executive and a coach, but there are many changes on the way and it "would have been difficult for everybody involved to put Kevin in this position."McHale, a northern Minnesota native and Hall of Fame player who won three NBA titles with the Boston Celtics in the 1980s, met several times with Kahn before the decision was reached.
