Pa. trooper killed in mountain highway shootout
TOBYHANNA — A Pennsylvania state trooper is dead and a colleague wounded after a highway shootout with a man who had kidnapped his 9-year-old son.
The 31-year-old suspect also was killed late Sunday, and the boy was being checked for injuries. Police said he was not shot.
Authorities said trooper Joshua Miller, 34, died at a hospital. His 35-year-old colleague, Robert Lombardo, was in satisfactory condition.
State police said the chase began near Easton in the Pocono Mountains as authorities responded to a report of a protection-from-abuse order violation. Police said the suspect fled with the boy.
The chase ended in Coolbaugh Township when the suspect crashed his car and exchanged gunfire with troopers.
