Viaduct detours begin Wednesday

Traffic pattern will last until October

Drivers will have to find a new way to get around part of downtown Butler starting Wednesday as detours begin because of construction on the Wayne Street Viaduct.

Those detours will continue through October.

Eastbound traffic on Route 356 will be directed from Center Avenue to Walker, Brugh, Fairview, Glenn and Brown avenues and back to Center. Westbound Route 356 traffic will follow Center Avenue.

Truck traffic will be directed from Route 356 to Route 228 to Route 8.

The detour is necessary during the completion of the five-span bridge over Cliff Street, Connoquenessing Creek, the Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad, and the Buffalo and Pittsburgh Railroad. This is a $9.5 million project being done by Mekis Construction.

Motorists also are reminded that Monroe Street is closed for a bridge replacement project there.

Because of the viaduct detour, the city fire department during the day time will house an engine at the Hazmat garage at the Butler County Communications Center on Morton Avenue Extension to speed response times to calls on the city's South Side. A crew of two will be with the engine.

Chief Nick Ban asked for residents to avoid parking on Spang Avenue to Standard Avenue so the engine from the Hazmat garage can better maneuver the streets.
