SWISSVALE — The Allegheny County Medical Examiner determined a man shot himself to end a police standoff that prompted a nearby junior high school to cancel classes.

The standoff in Swissvale ended about 7 a.m. Monday when police indicated the man had surrendered and was in custody. The medical examiner said Robert Tomer, 24, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head that he fired as police tried to enter his home.

The four-hour standoff prompted officials at Woodland Hills Junior High School to cancel classes Monday because of student safety concerns.

Swissvale police said Tomer's sister reported he was threatening to hurt several family members about 3 a.m. Monday.
