SWISSVALE — A junior high school has canceled classes this morning due to a hostage standoff at a nearby home.

The standoff in Swissvale ended about 7 a.m. with one man in custody, but officials at Woodland Hills Junior High School had already canceled classes because of concerns about getting students to the school safely.

Swissvale police say a woman reported a man was holding several family members hostage about 3 a.m. Police say those people got out safely. Police say the gunman surrendered and was being treated at a hospital for unspecified self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

The man's name and condition were not being released.

PITTSBURGH — The formal arraignment is set for a Pittsburgh man accused of fatally shooting three city police officers at his home on April 4.Allegheny County prosecutors plan to pursue the death penalty against 22-year-old Richard Poplawski. His arraignment is set for this morning.Poplawski remains jailed without bond on charges he shot officers Stephen Mayhle, Paul Sciullo II and Eric Kelly after Poplawski's mother called 911 about a fight she was having with her son.Poplawski is accused of lying in wait to shoot the officers as they arrived.Poplawski, or his attorney, was expected to enter a not guilty plea.Incarcerated defendants often do not appear in person for their formal arraignments in the county.

INDIANA — A state trooper is due in court to formally receive a life sentence for the bloody slashing death of his live-in girlfriend's estranged husband.An Indiana County jury in March convicted 43-year-old Trooper Kevin Foley of first-degree murder in he slaying of Blairsville dentist John Yelenic. A county judge is scheduled to impose the automatic life sentence without parole today.Foley denied killing Yelenic, but the jury rejected his testimony after six hours of deliberation.Yelenic was killed April 13, 2006, a day before he was to sign divorce papers from his wife, Michele, who was living with Foley.The divorce was so acrimonious that Yelenic's attorney tried unsuccessfully to get the divorce decree issued after his death.
