SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University track and field coach John Papa was named PSAC Women's Track Coach of the Year.

Papa guided The Rock to its fourth consecutive conference championship, a top regional ranking and a fifth-place finish in the final NCAA Division II national poll.

The honor is the 15th PSAC Coach of the Year award given to Papa in his 22 years at the helm.

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Red Sox starter John Smoltz had his longest and strongest outing of the season Sunday, working five innings in a rehab start for the Greenville Drive.Smoltz gave up a run on four hits against the Charleston RiverDogs, but he closed by retiring his final seven batters — including the final three on strikeouts.

The game began at 7:02 p.m. EDT Saturday and concluded 7 hours, 3 minutes later at 2:05 a.m. Sunday.Texas reliever Austin Wood pitched 13 innings, including 12 1-3 innings of no-hit ball before allowing a two-out single to Tony Sanchez in the 19th inning.

DETROIT — Pittsburgh Penguins star Evgeni Malkin won't be suspended for Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals despite drawing an instigator penalty for a fight with Detroit's Henrik Zetterberg in the final 19 seconds of a 3-1 loss to the Red Wings in Game 2 on Sunday night.Under NHL rules, any player drawing an instigating penalty in the final five minutes is to be suspended for the next game, but the rule allows considerable flexibility depending on the circumstances.
