Duane 'Jake' Conway

Duane "Jake" Lonsdale Conway, 81, of Old Bridge Village, North Fort Myers, Fla., formerly of Wexford, died at 3:36 a.m. Wednesday at the Hope Hospice, Cape Coral, Lee County, Fla., following an extended illness.

Born in Zelienople, March 26, 1928, he was the son of John Guthrie Conway and Beulah J. Lonsdale Conway.

He married Dorothy "Dot" M. Book, Aug. 10, 1956.

He was a member of the Ingomar United Methodist Church and an associate member of the First United Methodist Church in Fort Myers.

He graduated from Slippery Rock High School in 1946 and Slippery Rock State College, now Slippery Rock University, in 1956. He later received a master's degree in counseling from Westminster College.

Mr. Conway was a U.S. Army veteran and served in communication with the 21st regiment 24th Division. Following his service in Korea, he returned to Indiantown Gap. Pa., and was discharged in July 1952. In 1995, along with a group of other Korean veterans, he attended the Korean Memorial dedication in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Conway retired from the North Allegheny School District after a 30-year career in education. He began as a social studies and history teacher and later was a guidance counselor.

He was a member of the Slippery Rock University Alumni Association, the Grove City F&AM Lodge 603, the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of New Castle and the Syria Shrine, Pittsburgh.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Book Conway of North Fort Myers; a brother, John W. Conway and his wife, Kathryn, of Slippery Rock; a sister-in-law, Margaret "Peggy" Holben of Slippery Rock; four nieces, Mary M. Wiles of Cumming, Ga., Jane Malick of North Hills, Pittsburgh, Holly Lindey of Slippery Rock and Mary Jo Burglund of Slippery Rock.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

<B>CONWAY</B> - Visitation for Duane "Jake" Lonsdale Conway, who died Wednesday, April 22, 2009, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the <B>Smith Funeral Home</B>, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock, where a Masonic service will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Zion Baptist Church, 154 Currie Road, Slippery Rock, Worth Township, with the Rev. Thomas Meling, pastor of the Zion Baptist Church, and Pastor James McCandless, a retired Baptist pastor, officiating. Interment, with military honors, will be at the Zion Baptist Cemetery in Worth Township.Memorial contributions may be made to Hope Hospice, 9470 Health Park Circle, Fort Myers, FL. 33908 or to the Zion Baptist Memorial Fund, 154 Currie Road, Slippery Rock, PA 16057.
