Butler's Matt Slamecka picked up a first-round victory at the PIAA Class AAA Boys Single Tennis Championships at the Hershey Racquet Club Friday before dropping a quarterfinals decision to close out the season.

Slamecka, a junior, rolled past LaSalle's Brian Stefanowicz 6-0, 6-1 to advance to the afternoon's quarterfinals.

Council Rock North's David Kazakevich won the first set 6-3 before Slamecka rallied for a 7-5 second-set triumph.

Kazakevich, however, won the deciding set 6-2..
