MOUNTAIN TOP — A school district in northeastern Pennsylvania has no one to serve lunch due to a strike by support staff, including cafeteria workers.

Luzerne County's Crestwood School District is holding half-day classes due to the strike, which also involves teachers' aides, custodians, secretaries and other support staff. Elementary schools are dismissing at 1 p.m. and secondary schools at noon.

The 118-member Crestwood Education Support Professionals Association had been working under the terms of a contract that expired in 2001 until the strike began Monday. It was unclear how long it would continue.

CORAOPOLIS — Union faculty at Robert Morris University near Pittsburgh are taking a smaller raise next year so the school can put $180,000 more into a fund for student financial aid.The 145 members of the Faculty Federation were scheduled to get 2.75 percent raises for the 2009-2010 school year. Instead, they've agreed to take just a 1.3 percent raise.The school announced it was freezing the salaries of all nonfaculty staff next year and putting that $570,000 toward the financial aid fund, too.The university has imposed a hiring freeze and cut spending by 15 percent in most departments.The university's financial aid fund will be $16 million for next year. About 90 percent of students receive some kind of financial aid.

NEW KENSINGTON — A Pennsylvania Game Commission officer has tranquilized a 150-pound black bear roaming in a neighborhood.Game commission officials found the bear in New Kensington on Monday morning.When game officials arrived, the bear was up a tree. It fell about 20 feet to the ground when it was hit with the drugged dart, but game officials say the bear was not hurt.Game officials believe the animal was recently sent out on its own by its mother and likely wandered into the neighborhood while attempting to stake out its territory.The animal was taken state game lands in Cambria County and released.

LEECHBURG — Fifty suspected street-level drug dealers are in custody in what's being called the largest drug sweep ever in Armstrong County. District Attorney Scott Andreassi says Monday's sweep targeted 50 alleged dealers on 75 felony arrest warrants. The charges stem from undercover agents or informants who bought marijuana, cocaine, heroin, painkillers and other prescriptions drugs, including morphine over the last six months.Andreassi says officers from more than 20 police departments and agencies in the county and neighboring Westmoreland County participated in the sweep.

PITTSBURGH — A Pittsburgh attorney has been named the first woman to chair the board of directors at Duquesne University.Marie Milie Jones graduated from the private Catholic college in 1985 with a degree in French and got her law degree two years later from Duquesne.She served four years on the board of directors from 1997 to 2001, then returned as the board's vice chair from 2003 until the present.
