SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock girls track and field team made history on Saturday.

The Rockets scored 89 points at the District 10 Class AA Championships at Hickory High School, beating out Fort LeBoeuf High (70Z\x points) for the team title.

It is the first district team track and field title, girls or boys, in the history of the school.

"This is a first for us," said Rockets' coach Mike Kish. "It's pretty special."

Leading the way for Slippery Rock were seniors Angie Shaffer and Elissa McCune.

Shaffer won the 100-meter hurdles (15.26 seconds) and the high jump (five feet, seven inches), while McCune placed first in the 300 hurdles (45.94).

"With Angie coming back this year for us, we knew she was the top girl in the area in the 100 hurdles," said Kish. "And Elissa was highly ranked in the 300, but Michelle Grossman, Candace Hogue and Mallory Ralston, they all contributed in the hurdles this year as well.

"We swept both hurdles events in almost every dual meet this year."

For a team that finished no worse than second in the five invitationals it participated in this year and also won its region for the fourth year in a row, the Rockets received contributions from many athletes.

"We had struggled in the throws the last few years, but this season, a freshman, Brea Northcott, came up and added a lot for us in those events," Kish said.

In the running events, Casey Dudek, Alyssa Waryanka and Rachel Richter also played key roles, not only at Saturday's event, but all season long.

With the state championships next weekend at Shippensburg University marking the end of the high school season, Kish knows he will be losing a lot of talent to graduation.

"We are going to have a major rebuilding job on our hands next year," he said. "But we'll enjoy this while it lasts."

• For Slippery Rock's boys, Dave Caldwell won a District 10 Class AAA title in the pole vault last week (13-6) and will head to the PIAA meet as well.
