ADAMS TWP — Tack on another honor for longtime Mars High football coach Scott Heinauer.

In 17 years with Mars, Heinauer has guided the Planets to a school-record 108 wins, 13 WPIAL playoff appearances, four section titles and the WPIAL Class AA championship game.

Now he's been named head coach of the West squad for the ninth annual PSFCA East-West All-Star Game at 6 p.m. June 19 at Mansion Park in Altoona.

Heinauer has been secretary of the Pennsylvania State Football Coaches Association for the past 12 years. He was an assistant coach in the East-West game in 2004 and in the Big 33 All-Star Game in 2005. He also was head coach of the Northern Area Football Coaches All-Stars in 1997, 2000 and 2008.

"I consider this a huge honor," Heinauer said. "This is some of the best football talent in the state."

Players for the East-West Game are selected from the same pool of nominees who form Pennsylvania's team for the Big 33 game, which will be played June 20.

The Big 33 coaches choose their 34-player roster. Coaches from the East-West game then select their 33-man rosters.

"It's a detailed process, choosing these players," Heinauer said. "Any coach wishing to nominate a player must submit a highlight tape of that player along with two game films.

"I was involved with selecting the linemen and looked at 110 player tapes just for that position alone. There must have been 600 to 700 players submitted overall."

The West roster includes 10 players who have signed with Division I schools: Akron, West Virginia, Temple, Ohio State, Penn State, Bowling Green, Pitt and the Naval Academy.

Nolan Nearhoof, a Mars defensive lineman headed to Robert Morris, is playing in the game. So is North Hills quarterback Justin Heinauer, son of the Mars coach.

Justin Heinauer is headed to West Virginia Wesleyan.

This will be the first East-West game in which a head coach and son are on the same team.

"I'm excited about it," Heinauer said of coaching Justin. "Football is the only sport I haven't coached him in. I was only able to see four or five of his high school games."

Heinauer and East head coach Mark Evans of Eastern Lebanon County High are good friends and run versions of the Wing-T at their respective schools.

Neither will run that offense in this game, as teams must play a base 50 defense and utilize man-to-man coverage.

"This is a showcase of talent and we have a lot of players who can do a lot of things," Heinauer said.

Among them are Jeannette running back Jordan Hall, soon to be reunited with Terrelle Pryor at Ohio State, and West York running back and Bloomsburg recruit Brandon Real, who scored 40 touchdowns last season.

Thomas Jefferson quarterback Tyler Wehner, son of former Pittsburgh Pirates infielder John Wehner, is the other QB on the roster. Like Justin Heinauer, he is headed to West Virginia Wesleyan.

Former Slippery Rock High coach Clyde Conti is on Heinauer's coaching staff. Conti resigned his position at Slippery Rock last year and will not be coaching anywhere this fall.

"Slippery Rock University offered me a position, but I declined it," Conti said. "There's about 10 kids I've coached in high school playing small college football now and I'll spend Saturdays watching them."

Conti will be coaching the secondary in the East-West game and plans to use as lot of the coverages SRU has in place.

"I'm a big fan of (SRU defensive coordinator) Shawn Lutz and I've been talking to (SRU secondary coach) Rob Keys about their schemes," Conti said.

Conti won't label this game his coaching swan song.

"You never know what's going to happen down the road," he said.

Notes: Mars graduate and former Planets kicker Mike Baumgartel was the first MVP of the East-West Game. ... ... Through 2008, 540 players and 88 coaches have participated in the game, which has raised $45,000 for alumni players through the scholarship program.
