VERONA — St. Jude Golf Club members Sean Knapp and Nathan Smith combined forces to win the Fred Brand Foursomes WPGA event Thursday at the Long Vue Club.
Knapp and Smith carded a two-round score of 133, 12 strokes better than the runner-up duo of Tim Campbell and Rob Cimarolli.
The boys lacrosse teams at Butler and Seneca Valley will host WPIAL first-round playoff games this week.In Division I, Seneca Valley (13-3) plays Upper St. Clair at 8 p.m. Wednesday at NexTier Stadium.In Division II, Butler (8-5) plays Trinity at 7 p.m. Thursday at Art Bernardi Stadium.
HERMITAGE — John Aubrey Sr. of Aubrey's Dubbs Dred fired a 70 to tie for second place in the low professional event at the Yamaha/Nuttall Golf Car Pro-3 Amateur at Tam O'Shanter Golf Course Friday.Travis Dickson of Treesdale Golf and Country Club tied for fourth place with a 71.Aubrey also won a professional skin on the No. 4 hole.
PHOENIX — After firing Bob Melvin, the Arizona Diamondbacks have turned their fortunes over to a 34-year-old former catcher with no experience as a manager.A.J. Hinch was introduced Friday as Melvin's replacement as manager at a news conference, where general manager Josh Byrnes acknowledged the hiring was "unconventional."Hinch was in his fourth season as the Diamondbacks' director of player development. He becomes the youngest manager in the majors since Eric Wedge was hired by Cleveland in October of 2002.Byrnes, under sometimes pointed questioning about the hiring, said Hinch brings something he called "organizational advocacy" to the job.
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Lorena Ochoa topped the leaderboard for the sixth straight round on the LPGA Tour Friday, shooting a 6-under 65 to take a three-stroke lead in the Michelob Ultra Open at Kingsmill.Coming off a wire-to-wire victory two weeks ago in Mexico, the top-ranked Ochoa took advantage of perfect playing conditions and soft greens to pull away after several players made runs in the morning.Teeing off around the time Song-Hee Kim finished a record-tying 63 and In-Kyung Kim was polishing off a 64 that put them in front at 10 under, Ochoa started with three straight pars and then reclaimed the lead with birdies on six of the next eight holes.Ochoa is seeking her third victory in seven starts in 2009.Cristie Kerr, the 2005 winner, also shot a 63 to match to course record and join the two Kims at 10 under. Michelle Wie was 5 under after a 67.
