AAUW honors woman of year

Group celebrates 75th anniversary

The Butler branch of the American Association of University Women recently celebrated its 75th anniversary with a reception at Succop Conservancy.

Members were honored for years of service as well as past accomplishments.

Lorraine Kesterson was honored as this year's Woman of the Year for her contributions to the organization.

During the more than 10 years she has been a member, she has served as program chairwoman, recording secretary and book sale chairwoman, as well as volunteering for many other branch programs and activities.

Kesterson of Butler is retired from Seneca Valley School District where she was a librarian. She has a daughter and son-in-law in Butler and three grown grandchildren.

Also honored was member Lynne Mercer as Emerging Star, an award given to a newer members who has contributed to the mission of the organization. Mercer organized and promoted this year's LunaFest film festival and served on various other committees since joining AAUW in 2007.

Before becoming a full-time mother of two children, Mercer worked in the field of corporate communications. She lives in Jefferson Township with her husband and children.
