Environmental officials coming to Butler to talk about contaminated soil

State environmental representatives will be in Butler from 2:30 to 7 p.m. today to talk with residents of Butler's South Side about a recent revelation that soil in the Father Marinaro Park area, along Kaufman Drive, contains arsenic. The meeting is at Center Avenue Elementary School.

Arsenic, if it becomes airborne and is inhaled, can irritate the respiratory system. It also can irritate the skin.

The site has family housing units that are being renovated by the Butler County Housing Authority.

The testing was ordered by the state Department of Environmental Resources after the agency found suspicious-looking soil in an area where a pedestrian bridge is to be built for users of the Buffalo-Freeport Rails-to-Trails to get across Coal Run.
