Allegheny County ordered by court to do reassessment
PITTSBURGH — The Pennsylvania Supreme Court says Allegheny County must conduct a property tax reassessment for next year, but stopped short of ruling illegal a county statute that sets 2002 values as the baseline for taxation.
The justices on Wednesday found that Allegheny County's use of 2002 property values for tax purposes has allowed some properties to be taxed unfairly. The court found that system most often is unfair to those who own property in poorer areas.
Wednesday's rulings resulting from the county's appeal of a judge's order in 2007 striking down the county's property tax ordinance.
