BUTLER TWP - If only the Butler girls lacrosse team could play the first 8½ minutes over again.

It was in that span that Shady Side Academy built an 8-0 lead and, despite a game effort from the Golden Tornado the rest of the way, the Indians took a 17-10 WPIAL Division II, Section II win Tuesday night at Art Bernardi Stadium.

With Nicole Wei scoring 14 seconds into the contest, Shady Side Academy wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard.

The Indians' barrage continued, despite a timeout called by Butler coach Annie Succop following Shady Side's third goal with just 1:19 off the clock.

"We just looked scared," Succop said. "(Shady Side) has a very strong attack and we weren't able to do much against it early on."

Butler's Chelsey Rock scored her team's first goal with 13:02 remaining in the first half. It was followed by scores from Brianna Harvey and another from Rock to cut the Indians' edge to 8-3.

By halftime, Butler trailed 11-6, a positive for the Golden Tornado considering the early deficit.

"We stopped letting them get open in the middle of the zone," said Succop. "We stepped up and began going after the ball."

Liz Manuel scored for Butler 22 seconds into the second half, but Shady Side Academy tallied the next five scores to take a 16-7 lead with 9:37 left in the game.

Jen Cozen led SSA with five goals. The team also received three scores from Alexis Concordia and Piper Person, and a pair from Katie Procosnick.

"We're really playing well as a unit right now," said Indians coach Alison Francis. "We're extremely strong with our attack."

Rock led Butler with five goals, including one in which she went coast to coast late in the game, sifting through several Shady Side defenders before beating goalie Delia Loughrey.

"She started off a bit slow this season," Succop said of Rock, a junior defensive midfielder. "But she's really picked things up in the last few games."

Manuel added three scores for the Tornado, while Harvey and Amanda Huey each scored once.

Butler goalie Lydia Garcia made 11 saves while Loughrey had eight for the Indians (8-2 overall).

Butler (4-7) plays at North Hills Thursday.

Butler's junior varsity team dropped a 6-5 decision to the Indians.
