JACKSON TWP - The North Hills baseball team was looking for a bit of payback.

With the help of a few odd sequences during the course of their game Monday at Seneca Valley, the Indians got it in a 6-4 victory.

Seneca Valley beat North Hills 17-1 April 8.

But this time around, the Indians scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning without the benefit of a base hit to take a 6-4 lead.

When the Raiders tried to start a rally in the bottom of the seventh, North Hills used a bit of trickery to snuff it out.

SV's Jay Condit led off the frame with a single to center field for his third hit of the game.

After attempting to pickoff Condit several times, Indians relief pitcher Jesse Bauer, who had just replaced reliever Brandon McLean, went through the motion of yet another pickoff attempt, but kept the ball in his right hand.

As Condit dove back into first base, North Hills first baseman Coleman Mazur turned as if to chase down an errant throw.

Condit got up and took off for second base, but Bauer made the easy throw and the runner was tagged out.

The Raiders did get another baserunner when Sam Bucci walked, but Jake Double grounded into a 6-3 double play to end the game.

"That was the first time we tried it this year," said North Hills coach Nate Buttenfield of the phantom pickoff attempt. "(Condit) seemed to be a bit jumpy a few minutes earlier when a (real) pickoff throw almost got away. We figured we'd give it a try and see what happens."

"That was the first time I've seen a team use the fake pickoff with (only) a runner at first base," said Raiders coach Eric Semega. "And all of their players on the bench were yelling, 'Go.'

"But, it's well within the rule book."

Semega also knew that his team didn't help matters, committing four errors and allowing the Indians (7-6, 2-6) to score a pair of unearned runs.

Seneca Valley had one miscue in each inning from the third through the sixth.

It was the sixth frame that proved to be the most costly.

SV had broken a 3-all tie in the bottom of the fifth when Double's single scored courtesy runner Chris Dorogy.

But North Hills watched its first two batters of the sixth reach base safely when Anthony Valeriano walked and Taylor Schmidt reached on a fielder's choice.

On the play, Condit, SV's starter and the eventual losing pitcher, fielded a groundball and tried to get Valeriano, who slid safely into third.

Valeriano then stole home to tie the game.

After one out, Brandon Pritchard reached on a fielding error as Schmidt scored to put the Indians up 5-4.

Condit was pulled in favor of Sam Bucci, who later balked with two outs, allowing Pritchard to score.

"It seemed like we gave (North Hills) four outs every inning," said Semega. "You do that and you're going to lose."

Seneca Valley (7-4, 4-4) led 3-2 after two innings, with Condit contributing an RBI double in the first, Double scoring on a wild pitch and Vinnie Rice singling in a run, both in the second inning for.

"It comes down to whether or not the kids want to come in every day and still work hard to get better," said Semega. "Regardless of record, if you get better from the beginning of the season to the end, it's a successful year. Right now, we're not improving."
