Pittsburgh's Roman Catholic bishop is reorganizing the diocese so its priests will have to spend less time on administration and can do more pastoral work taking care of church members.

Bishop David Zubik has done away with 16 pastor-based deaneries that make up the diocese. Deaneries are subdivisions headed by local pastors, who reported to the bishop on various church issues.

Instead, the six-county diocese in southwestern Pennsylvania will be divided into four new parts called vicariates.

The reorganization also includes the creation of a new post, Secretariat for Parish Life and Lay Leadership, designed to get the diocese's 760,000 members more involved in church activities.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner says a ruptured blood vessel killed a Duquesne University student who died suddenly in his dorm room.Authorities say 19-year-old Joe Irwin was found unresponsive by his roommate about 9 p.m. Tuesday and was pronounced dead at UPMC Mercy hospital a short time later.The medical examiner's office says that an autopsy showed Irwin died when the vessel ruptured, filling the sack around his heart with blood.Irwin was majoring in physical therapy.Irwin graduated from Bethel Park High School in 2008. He was a star player on that school's volleyball team.

The lawyer for a Pittsburgh man accused of killing three police officers says the prosecutor violated a gag order by telling reporters he was seeking the death penalty.A hearing was scheduled this morning on defense lawyer Lisa Middleman's request to punish District Attorney Stephen Zappala Jr.Middleman represents 22-year-old Richard Poplawski, who's accused of killing the three officers in the Stanton Heights neighborhood of Pittsburgh on April 4.Last week, a judge issued a gag order telling those involved with the case not to discuss it outside court. On Monday, Zappala told reporters he was seeking the death penalty.
