BUTLER TWP - The Butler boys track and field team didn't have a large margin for error during Tuesday's meet with visiting North Allegheny.

The Tornado handled things well, but the Tigers were too deep in most events in their 91-59 victory that decided the section championship in NA's favor.

"We ended up taking more first places (9Z\x-8Z\x) than they did, but we talked about those second and third places," said Butler coach Rick Schontz.

"To win the meet, we were going to need those and that was the meet. North Allegheny has more depth and that turned the tide (Tuesday)," Schontz added.

Butler opened the track portion with an impressive showing in the 3,200 relay as Ben Porter, Lance Dugger, Nathan Neff and Evan Gomez won with a time of 8 minutes, 3.68 seconds. Logan Renwick followed up with a win at 110 hurdles (15.00 and Bryan Vavro was third.

"Our relay team did an excellent job. That was their best time of the year," said Schontz.

Renwick was par for the meet, winning four events, including the 300 hurdles (40.0), the long jump (22 feet, 6 inches) and triple jump (43-1Z\x).

The Tigers (6-0) benefited from a win in the sprints by Brian Austin (100, 11.1), 200 (22.8), who also was a member of the winning 400 relay (44.1).

"We knew we had the strong sprint guys, the distance guys and the throwing guys,"said Tigers coach John Neff. "They carried some real weight. And in our jumps, we took 1 and 2 in the high jump and 2 and 3 in the long and triple jumps. I was real pumped about that."

Butler also picked up wins by Eli Christy in the 400 (51.9), Dylan O'Donnell in the shot put (46-8), Adam Marzullo in the pole vault (13-0) and Nathan Neff tied Appman in the 800 (2:01.8).

The 1,600 relay team of Nathan Seezox, Mason McLaughlin, Christy and Darius Hightower closed the meet with a winning time of 3:32.2.

In the girls meet, the Tigers pulled away in a 95-55 victory as they won 10 of the 11 track events. The Tornado's lone win was Ashton Dolan in the 3,200 (12:13.3).

But what slowed the Tornado out of the gate was a fall by Trisha Brandt in the 3,200 relay, which the Tigers won by more 13 seconds.

"That took the wind out of our sails," said Butler coach Rod Harris. "That set the tone for NA. We needed that to get us on high and NA below the wave. We needed to be way ahead on the anchor leg, but we fell on the first leg."

The Tigers (6-0) continued to roll on the track as the Tornado (4-2) had only one second place along the way and outpointed Butler 69-13.

"We knew we were young on our girls team and seemed to be rebuilding, but the girls have been a pleasant surprise," said Neff. "I think we surprised a lot of people."

Haley Carter led the Tigers with wins in the 100 (13.0), 200 (26.8) and 400 (59.4), and was the anchor in the winning 1,600 relay team (4:14.03).

In the field events, Butler had wins by Lexis Frost in the triple jump (34-6Z\x), Paige Rittelman in the high jump (5-2), Bri Lumley in the shot put (37-8Z\x) and Marina Gracik in the javelin (113-9). The Tornado swept the javelin and the shot put.

With the section season finished, it's time for the team to shift its attention to new goals.

"That's it for the team," said Harris. "Now, we focus on the individuals."

The Butler boys team, however, still has next Wednesday's team playoffs to contend with.

Both teams also have a May 1 date at the Baldwin Invitational, as well as the WPIAL Qualifiers at Butler High School the following week.
